My top 5 of this year is (in my opinion) awesome
1. Scott Pilgrim vs The World
Directed by Edgar Wright
Written by Michael Bacall and Edgar Wright
It is hard not to put Edgar Wright's ridiculously fast paced “Scott Pilgrim” at the top of my list. The whole movie is just one long rollercoaster ride that never lets up and never gets boring. The first time I saw the movie my jaw dropped after the opening credits and after seeing it more than 4 times I can safely say that the movie continues to impress me every time I see it. Every time I pop the blu ray into my player I become instantly involved and totally into the world that has been created. Even if you don't love the movie you can't deny the creativity and technical sophistication that went into every frame. Visual effects are used constantly but in a way that feels fresh and truly spectacular. This movie is easily creeping its way up to becoming my favorite movies of all time and a lot of people had problems with me saying this but I still stand by my statement simply because no movie has ever filled me with as much joy and excitement as Scott Pilgrim vs The World.
2. Exit Through the Gift Shop
Directed by Banksy
Now before I start this review I have to say that I fucking love street art. I think it is art in one of it's purest forms, where only the truly dedicated will even try because there is such a high risk. Before the movie I already enjoyed street art but this movie made me obsessed with it. From the amazing opening montage which sums up everything great about the street art movement, to the amazingly interesting Thierry, to the vigilante imagery and almost batman like quality of banksy, this movie is an hour and a half of pure entertainment. By the end of the movie you will have learned so much and experienced so much without even realizeing how much you are learning while you are watching it. Exit through the Gift Shop is everything I love about street art printed on a film reel and that is why I love it.

3. Batman: Under the Red Hood
Directed by Brandon Vietti
Written by Judd Winick
This is Batman, this is why I love Batman. From the action to the tone and atmosphere to the intense story, this movie is pure Batman. Now don't get me wrong, I love the dark knight and consider it to be the best Batman film of all time but Under the Red Hood did all the things that the Dark Knight didn't and is a close 2nd. It achieves a dark, gritty tone without forgetting what it is, a superhero movie. It is extremely short while still having a very satisfying story. It can have a ridiculous action scene without it seeming ridiculous, and most of all it is fun. The Dark Knight is a revolutionary movie but it is extremely long and intense, you have to plan your day out if you want to watch it. Batman Under the Red Hood is like if you want to watch the dark knight but don't want to have to commit to such a long harsh experience. It is fun, action packed, bat-goodness.
4. Catfish
Directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman
I can't really say much about this movie without ruining the experience, so instead I will just sum up my emotions while watching it. Joy, intrigue, skepticism, fear, excitement, pain, sympathy, tragedy, sadness, sympathy again, hope, heartbroken. Out of all the films on my list, this is the one I recommend to everybody, because this is a movie that everybody should see and experience. And that is Catfish.
5. Black Swan
Directed by Darren Aranofsky
Written by Mark Heyman and Andres Heinz
This movie is so cinematic and over the top that I believe that it encapsulates everything that a movie is, should be, and is meant to be. Watching Ninas descent into madness is one of the most intense and horrifying experiences you will have in a movie theatre and it will remind you exactly why you love movies, or at least why I love movies. I love movies because they can introduce you to something new, it can make you believe in the impossible, movies will make you attach to a character and feel everything they go through, it will show you the most beautiful things you can possibly imagine and then in the next instant show you something that will emotionally hurt you and scar you, all within 2 hours. Black Swan achieves each of these things in their most extreme sense. It is an intense experience and should not be taken lightly but if you are up to having your mind manipulated by someone as skillfull and intense as Darren Aronofsky than I definitely suggest seeing Black Swan.
Honorable Mentions:
Four Lions
Directed by Christopher Morris
Written by Christopher Morris and Simon Blackwell
I think that the reason I loved this movie so much (besides it being a hilarious, beautifully crafted movie) is that it was so ballsy in what it set out to do. This movie took one of the darkest subjects imaginable and gave it heart and humour and turned it into a hilarious comedy while still somehow managing to avoid obvious jokes and racism. It did this all and still managed to finish with a very very dark ending. And for that I think that this movie is really an amazing achievement in film making and a really underrated pick this year.
Toy Story 3
Directed by Lee Unkrich
Written by John Lasseter and Andrew Stanton
Not much to say here. An impressive fun movie and the perfect example on how to end a trilogy.
How to Train Your Dragon
Directed by Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders
Written by William Davies and Dean Deblois
This movie made me believe in 3D as the future of movies. How to Train Your Dragon tells a cliché story but it's not about that, it's about how it's executed that makes this movie so awesome. The flying scenes are truly a sight to behold and it makes me really sad that I will never get to experience that in theaters again, at least until the sequels come out. Unfortunately knowing dreamworks track record for sequels CoughShrekCough it makes me worried. The last 20 minutes of this movie is the single greatest and most thrilling climax I have seen in a theater. It is truly exciting when the camera is hundreds of feet up in the air and then suddenly shoots towards the water with toothless, and seeing the entire audience lean back in unison makes the experience even cooler.
